SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Richard Perso + Alawishus Jones & the OLs
DESCRIPTION:A fun time will be had on our July 2017 Tram\, as the rising young powerhouse from Yackanadandah Richard Perso makes his Blues Tram debut and a rag-tag ragtime ensemble makes it’s long awaited return to the rails: Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies; \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nRichard Perso:\nThe one man excitement machine\, Richard Perso has developed a delivery blending multiple genres fused into a folky rocking roots and blues. Perso doesn’t seem to have enough arms\, legs or lungs to pull off such a physically demanding performance but that doesn’t stop him from playing 3 didgeridoos\, driving a weapons cache of 3 overdriven acoustic guitars and replacing the drummer with little more than his 2 feet. \nAlawishus Jones & The Outright Lies:\nA humorous and informative approach to the story and meaning behind the blues which celebrates the souls who created this music\, commemorates their struggle and honors their legacy. “Time travelers Alawishus\, Wilby & Cleitus will take you back in time\, tell you stories about the old days and sing you some authentic rural blues\, ragged tunes\, maybe even some old time spirituals.” – Americana/pre war blues \nSaturday July 8th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Richard Perso + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:15pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or http://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. For the enjoyment of all patrons\, any rowdy or loud behaviour will not be tolerated. Event management reserves the right to refuse admission or evict patrons if requests to manage behaviour are not complied with; in this unlikely event\, tickets of offenders will be forfeited and no refund will be available.

SUMMARY:Josh Owen\, Cameron James Henderson & Tim Hulsman
DESCRIPTION:A special soul-filled triple header of singer/songwriter/guitarists at the Old Church on the Hill\, featuring: Josh Owen + Cameron James Henderson + Tim Hulsman. Doors open 7pm. Only $15 entry\, tickets at the door. \nAbout our artists: \nJosh Owen:\n“Josh’s effortless charm and fusion of jazzy\, acoustic soul seamlessly merge sun-soaked Latin riffs and off-beat percussionistic playing with wistful emotive anthemic choruses” – Callum Fitzpatrick – Beat Magazine.\n“Australia’s Segovia” – Ernest Ranglin.\nHoned in the musical melting pot of Melbourne’s Brunswick Street\, Josh’s modern day spin on spiritual soul\, a melange of funk jazz soul and reggae\, creates an upbeat and sensual urban soundscape that stretches the bounds of roots music. \nCameron James Henderson:\nHighly regarded singer songwriter/guitarist Cameron James Henderson’s songs consist of lush harmonies\, interwoven guitar textures and stomping grooves. Lyrically they evoke elements of Dylan\, whilst musically the duo’s influences range from Ry Cooder\, Muddy Waters and Mark Knopfler. Expect beautiful resonator slide combined with telecaster bite. \nTim Hulsman:\n“Hard worn Folk Blues with a Rock’n’Roll attitude”\nTim Hulsman is a genre-defying songwriter and wizard on the lap steel guitar. His soul-drenched vocals\, memorable melodies and unique roots/pop sensibility make every show a thrill\, but it’s through his story-telling stage banter that he shines as a true entertainer.\nTim was the inaugural recipient of the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation Scholarship (2015 -16) for excellence in song writing\, stagecraft and artistic vision. \nThe Old Church on the Hill is located on the corner of Harkness and Russell Streets\, Quarry Hill\, Bendigo.\nThe Singer/Songwriter Showcase events\, staged there by the BB&RMF crew on a semi-regular basis\, are an opportunity to enjoy a House Concert vibe in a public venue. The door charge is generally $15 for adults ($10 for Friends of the Festival members) and\, although refreshments are available for sale\, the focus is on THE MUSIC. Sound production is supplimented at the Old Church on the Hill by our friends at Muso’s Stuff Bendigo (facebook.com/Musos.Stuff) and 100% of the door takings are able to be shared between the performers with thanks to our valued sponsors at Kensey Care (facebook.com/KenseyCare).

A prohibition-style bar in the heart of the historic Bendigo\, come and slip out of the winter and back in time. Music Starts at 9pm. \nWith the last of my Melbourne shows finished up for the season\, I’ll be heading to Bendigo for this intimate solo night at the Bendigo Basement bar\, followed by the Blues & Roots Showcase/Fundraiser at The Vine on Sunday 17th July. \nThese mark my last shows in Victoria before I head South to Hobart to study music and disappear into a musical chrysalis\, not to re emerge until spring. Thank you to all of the amazing people who have supported my journey in in 2017. I’m hopelessly grateful to all of you.

SUMMARY:Blues & Roots Showcase/Fundraiser at The Vine
DESCRIPTION:After another brilliant November Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival in 2016\, 2017’s supporting events will again be limited in number but packed with even more fresh talent and brilliant music\, at some of our favourite local venues – our Winter Showcase/Fundraiser event for this year will again be at the Golden Vine Hotel. \nThe packed list of acts confirmed to perform at this year’s BB&RMF Winter Showcase event includes some of Bendigo’s best\, along with some fresh faces and exciting sounds from the larger blues\, soul\, jazz and original music circuits who’ve put their respective hands up to support our not-for-profit community music festival. Here’s some of the acts playing the Vine on July 16: The Deans of Soul\, Catfish Voodoo\, Nardia Rose Band\, Matt Katsis\, Kelly Brouhaha\, Cameron James Henderson\, The Barren Spinsters\, Tasha Zappala\, Tim Hulsman\, Wayne Jury\, Savannah Rose\, William Alexander\, Bill Barber & The Revellators\, Dave Diprose\, Mariah McCarthy\, Mr Wilby & Me… with more to be announced! \nAs always\, these artists are donating their time and talents for this Fundraiser\, as do the Festival’s volunteer committee and crew\, to help boost the kitty to pay for the Festival itself\, to be held on November 9-12\, 2017. \nTo continue to fund this predominantly free festival\, your support and assistance is needed. So spread the word and bring a posse to the Golden Vine Hotel Bendigo on Sunday 16 July and help grow the burgeoning music scene we’ve managed to revitalise together over the last 7 years or so in Central Victoria. \nOn behalf of our local venues\, local and visiting artists\, and all of us who enjoy a wide range of live music to choose from on a weekly basis\, ‘Thank You’ for your ongoing support of grass-roots music events! \nTickets for the Winter Showcase event are available at the door on the day and are $15 for adults\, $5 for under-18s (with under-12s free). Friends of the Festival (FOF Members) enter free – FOF card must be presented. \nThe live music will start at 12pm sharp and continue through till 8pm.

SUMMARY:Lloyd Spiegel - Bendigo CD Launch
DESCRIPTION:Lloyd Spiegel plays at the Old Church on the Hill on Saturday\, August 12. Doors at 7.30pm.\nLocal boy\, Animal Time front man and 2004 Lazenby Young Guitarist award winner\, Sean Nudl is supporting.\nTickets: https://www.stickytickets.com.au/52271/lloyd_spiegel_this_time_tomorrow_album_launch__bendigo.aspx \nBlues Maestro on the hill – from Bendigo Weekly\, by Simon Wooldridge \nBendigo holds good memories for Australian blues icon Lloyd Spiegel.\n“Bendigo was the first place I ever went outside of Melbourne to play\, when I was 11. At that age\, it felt like a ‘tour’.” Spiegel told the Weekly. He reckons he’s now played here about 50 times.\nIt’s not only gigs that bring him here though.\n“I go to Bendigo quite often without a guitar. It’s been a favourite spot for me for many years to get away for a few days. In part that’s because the blues is a strong genre there\, so I feel at home\, but also it has the mix of history and cafe lifestyle I crave.”\nSpiegel’s next formal visit is Saturday\, August 12 at the Old Church on the Hill on one of the final legs of his current Australian tour.\nLittle rest though; he’s off to Canada at the end of August\, followed by another round of Australian venues.\nThis punishing-looking schedule is in support of new album\, This Time Tomorrow\, which was released in early July. It’s his first studio album since Tangled Brew in 2010.\nSpiegel’s approach to this album was a bit different.\n“Usually I tour tracks for months before recording them\, but this CD was made prior to any of the tracks being heard or performed. That means that you go in blindly hoping people like the songs. It’s quite daunting\,” he said.\n“Night one of the tour in Sydney\, I was trying to get that point across to the audience and for some reason at that moment I felt it was best explained by saying ‘You know how you never know if your kids are ugly till others start recoiling in horror? That’s how I feel about these songs. I’m hoping they’re not ugly children.’”\nIt seems they’re not ugly children though; the album has been rapturously received by public and media alike.\n“Spiegel is an artist who understands how to get a guitar to sing and cry and scream\,” Benjamin Smith said in his Amplify review of This Time Tomorrow.\n“I find more and more these days that the best reactions I get are not to the blistering guitar tracks but to the songwriter tracks that are simple in their delivery.” Spiegel said.\n“That surprises me because so much of my career has been based on the guitar\, but maybe it means I’m improving as a writer. Either way\, performing the new tracks has opened-up a new chapter with new stories and new ideas.”\nLloyd Spiegel has come a long way since Sunday afternoons at the Station Hotel in Prahran as a young boy sitting on a milk crate\, watching and listening in awe to the likes of Dutch Tilders and Geoff Achison.\nSpiegel is approaching blues legend status domestically\, and has a dedicated international following. He recently toured the Czech Republic for the first time.\nSpiegel’s shows are intense\, albeit littered with insightful and humorous anecdotes. His guitar playing though\, is just something else. A great night is in store.

SUMMARY:Lily & King + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies\, live@the Vine
DESCRIPTION:Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival favourites\, Lily & King will fill the Golden Vine with their unique brand of musical madness on Sat 26 August\, supported by their Bendigo mates from a bygone era Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies.\nMusic from 9pm. Door charge only $10. Get in early for a good spot – this is a gig you will be telling your friends about after its all said and done. \nLily and King + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies = kooky medicinal music and mayhem. \nLily & King’s new CD:\nLily and King\, are celebrating the release of their second album: ‘Bless This Life’\, produced by ARIA award winning guitarist Matt Walker.\n Lily Sutton delivers a luring\, sensual haze of smoky-opiate vocals and rapturously disrespectful brass (playing trombone\, trumpet and tuba throughout)\, while Tony J. King slams a rhythmic driving junkyard of guitars and percussion.\n The twelve track album\, which has a distinctly Australian flavour (“Bondi Junction Baby” and “Brett Whiteley’s Woman”)\, takes listeners to tangled spaces – from the all-in bluegrass orgy of the title track to mesmerising and delicate seaside waltzes\, passionate wailing klezmer (with violinist Alex Burkoy-Tinpan Orange)\, and crunchy down-home blues.\n Walker’s inimitably understated and honest production style underpins ‘Bless This Life’\, and captures all the energy and wild romance of the duo’s live performances. It is an absolute must listen.\n Lily and King are touring the country to showcase ‘Bless this Life’\, which is available for purchase from the Lily and King website or from shows and festivals. \nAlawishus Jones & The Outright Lies:\nLet Alawishus\, Wilby & Cleitus take you folks all the way\nback to the year o’nineteen and thirty. They’ll likely tell\nyou stories about the old times and sing\nyou some authentic rural blues\, rag tunes & maybe even some old time spirituals.\nWhat can we expect from AJ&theOLs – Old blues.\n– Maybe some pre blues stuff that contains elements essential to the birth of blues like work song\, field holler & ragged time\n– Mostly what you can expect though is 3 guys having a lot of fun\n– Guitar\, drums\, washboard\, bass\, trumpet\, harmonica & ukulele\n– Stories and anecdotes that could have historical significance or might be outright lies

Once again we invite performers to come along and strut their stuff on stage into the big condenser mic\, in front of a supportive audience. So you may be a seasoned or aspiring performer\, or a listener keen to relax with some great acoustic music on a Friday night. The bar will be in operation so you can also enjoy a cool Friday wine\, cider\, beer or soft drink. Starting at 6:30pm at The Old Church on the Hill. Gold coin donation entry.
