SUMMARY:Above The Bit // Single Launch
DESCRIPTION:i hear django presents Above The Bit\nSUN 20 OCT // The Old Church on the Hill\, Bendigo VIC\nw/Charm of Finches\nDoors 3PM // $15+bf  https://www.trybooking.com/BFZIR \nLauded songwriters in their own right\, Luke Watt & Nigel Wearne join forces to go Above The Bit. Skirting the fringes of blues\, country and outlaw folk\, their diverse influences include Richard Thompson\, Tom Waits and the spirit of Woody Guthrie. Above The Bit shines a light on true tales of mutiny and civil disobedience that lie in the shadows of Australian history. \nNigel Wearne is “one of Australia’s emerging songwriters” (Tone Deaf) and Luke Watt is “the real deal…so real you feel you already know him” (ABC Radio). Together\, they tap into the psyche and emotive fabric of their subjects\, harnessing the power of narrative and verse with an informed historical approach and social conscience. \nProduced and recorded by Matt Walker and featuring Danny McKenna (drums) and Steve Hadley (bass)\, Land of Equal Share is the debut single from Above The Bit’s forthcoming self-titled album. Land of Equal Share will be officially released on October 18 with a limited edition 7” vinyl. \nIn a time of fake news and social dissent\, Above The Bit is as relevant as ever. Some tales don’t heal unless they’ve been told. #abouttobetold \nFor more details check out: abovethebitmusic.com

SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Geoff Achison + Cass Eager (Duo)
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being serenaded by two great acts. \nCass Eager:\nNamed by folk-blog Timber and Steel as ‘Janis Joplin and Ben Harper’s love-child’\, Cass Eager’s mix of raw blues\, husky soul and lighthearted ditties are all punctuated with her unique whisky-soaked vocals. Emotive\, slightly raspy\, at times tender and at times powerful – Eager’s voice is the driving force of her music.\nInternationally-renowned but defiantly grassroots\, Cass Eager is one of those rare artists that’s mastered everything from the foot-stomping blues to a sensual slow burner. She’s been called ‘one of the best female singers in Australia’ by Richard Glover (ABC)\, and even Diesel claims she could ‘sing the phone book to you and you wouldn’t get bored’. \nGeoff Achison:\nGeoff Achison is an award winning blues-roots artist from Australia known for his energetic live performances and unique guitar mastery. Geoff began his apprenticeship with legendary Australian blues stylist ‘Dutch’ Tilders establishing himself as a fine lead guitarist before striking out with his own. He was an independent music pioneer releasing music on his own record label in the early 90s and touring throughout the USA\, UK & Europe. Geoff’s music has been compared favourably to Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers Band having a solid foundation in the blues whilst embracing a variety of electric & acoustic styles. His songwriting is original and thoughtful with a wry sense of humour reminiscent at times of Randy Newman\, JJ Cale and Mose Allison. \nSaturday November 9th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Geoff Achison + Cass Eager\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 8pm\, returning 10:30pm.\nTix: $39 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or online here: https://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being serenaded by two great acts. \nGeoffrey Williams:\nMuch loved UK singer songwriter & loop artist Geoffrey Williams dishes up some soulful delectations of 60s/70s influenced blues\, rhythm and soul with a Caribbean twist!\nHis career highlights include:\n5 albums on major labels such as Atlantic Records and EMI\,\nwriting for artists such as Michael Jackson and Dusty Springfield\,\nplaying at Wembley Arena\, London Jazz Cafe and Montreux Jazz Festival.\nperforming at festivals such as Bendigo Blues & Roots\, Woodford Folk\, Castlemaine State\nHe co-directed The Boite Millenium Chorus’s ‘WINDRUSH’ in 2016 featuring self-penned songs about the story of his parents’ migration from the Caribbean to the UK and was also Australian National Busking Open Champion in 2017!\nExpect to be mesmerised by sweet melodies and irresistible grooves – catch him and you won’t regret it! \nBuddy Knox:\nBuddy Knox is a funky blues man\, described as Australia’s answer to B.B. King\nTamworth-based musician Buddy Knox grew up playing in the family band and has been a working musician his entire life. Buddy has carved up the Blues scene around Australia since 2007\, playing at all the big ticket Australian festivals. He has two Chain awards and won the Sydney Blues Society Performer of the Year twice!\nBuddy is an extraordinary guitarist. His technical capability as a guitarist is outstanding and is matched by his astonishing instinctual grasp of the blues genre. Buddy first picked up a guitar at just ten years of age. His big ambition was to “play like Chuck Berry”. Despite the challenge of practicing on an old worn guitar\, which was missing a string\, Buddy’s goal to play persisted with his natural talent flourishing. Music and playing guitar became Buddy’s lifelong dedication.\nHe has demonstrates a complete grasp of the work of the greats from Robert Johnson to Freddie King and BB King to Buddy Guy. \nSunday November 10th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Geoffrey Williams + Buddy Knox\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 1pm\, returning 3:30pm.\nTix: $39 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or online here: https://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO. SUMMARY:Lazy Eye 'Whisky & Gin' tour
DESCRIPTION:Think B.B. King sharing a scotch with Booker T at the Crossroads after midnight. With more awards than you can poke a mojo hand at\, what started out as a hair brained idea between two friends medicating their way through jazz school over a bottle of red has taken them on an adventure that spans the globe. Multiple gongs in fact suggest Lazy Eye delivers some of the best original blues Australia has to offer. \nNot all smooth sailing however\, it was while broken down on the side of the highway in their well worn tour van that Lazy Eye learned they had been named Group Of The Year at the 2015 Australian Blues Music Awards where they were to appear. But regional Australia\, where the act cut their teeth is a long way from the famed B.B. Kings Blues Club in Memphis where they performed to a packed house just one year later. \nDelighting audiences throughout their homeland and from the U.S. to Japan\, Evan Whetter’s vocals are gritty with a velvety smack of soul\, wielding his weather beaten Hammond with style as he leads an all killer no filler line up featuring rising star of the guitar Erica Graf and the supremely talented Mario Marino on drums. Lazy Eye’s latest offering Black Hill perfectly captures the band in their native environment\, live in concert and catapulted the band again to “Group Of The Year at the 2019 Australian Blues Music Awards as well as earning a finalist nomination for “Song Of The Year”. This time you bet they didn’t break down and miss all the fun! \nSupported by local blues powerhouse Messin’ Round\, it’s a night not to be missed! \nDon’t miss the opportunity to check them out live at The All Seasons Bendigo! Tickets just $20 #allseasonsallgood

SUMMARY:Carus Thompson (WA)
DESCRIPTION:Following on from his performance at the 2019 Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival\, having just released his latest album\, Shakespeare Avenue\, we are excited to welcome Freo’s Carus Thompson back to The Shiraz Republic. \nFree entry. Lunch from 12pm. Music 2PM-5PM. \n— \nGlobe trotting troubadour Carus Thompson has toured the world alongside The John Butler Trio\, The Waifs\, Xavier Rudd\, Jack Johnson & Pete Murray\, selling over 30\,000 albums along the way. \nHe returns with his seventh studio album Shakespeare Avenue. \nRecorded in Dartmoor\, in the South-West of England with Mercury nominated producer Sean Lakeman\, the album takes its name from a street in Bath\, Somerset where Thompson’s late Grandfather lived\, before he left his home for Australia. \nIn the reverse of his Grandfather’s journey\, for Shakespeare Avenue Thompson moved his family to Dartmoor to write and record with a new approach that delved further down the folk path\, spurred by his connection with good friend and folk-star Seth Lakeman. \nSeth\, his brother Sean (who’s supurb production perfectly accentuates Thompson’s songs)\, and Sean’s partner the sublime Kathryn Roberts all feature on Shakespeare Avenue. Often referred to as a “virtual folk dynasty”\, the trio bring their heavyweight musicianship to the record. \nThompson’s narrative\, character based\, emotive songs have long earned him comparisons to Springsteen and Mellancamp\, however this time there is also a distinct Richard Thompson\, Christy Moore\, Dick Gaughin folk edge. \nThe connection with the Lakeman clan\, together with the move to England\, has paid dividends with what is undeniably Thompson’s best work to date. \nHe launches the album around Australia through October / November before taking these new songs to Europe & the UK in 2020. \n“This is quality songwriting” – Jeff Jenkins\, Living in the Land of OZ \n“A treasure in the Australian musical landscape” – The Dwarf \n— \nAs always expect some great Shiraz Republic wines on pour\, Cornella Brewery beers on tap and a fully stocked bar with everything else. \nFood stall details tbd. SUMMARY:Blues Tram w/Matt Katsis + Jess Parker & The Troubled Waters
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being serenaded by two great acts: \nMatt Katsis:\n“A bluesman at heart\, avid wanderer reflecting troubadour tradition\, albeit delicately picked ballads to foot stomping slide guitar driven down-home blues swagger. Melbourne singer-songwriter & guitarist Matt Katsis features a “one-man-band” approach through use of percussive elements of the acoustic guitar\, kick drum\, stomp-box and tambourine\, this has seen Matt take to audiences far and wide with the ease and merit that parallel’s his music.\nPast festival performances include our very own Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival\, Blues on Broadbeach (QLD)\, Queenscliff Music Festival (VIC)\, Illawarra Folk Festival (NSW) and most recent support shows with Australian Roots Music Legends Jeff Lang & The Backsliders has certainly set the tone for what’s to come.\nHis latest live album release ‘Live At The Wheaty’ encompasses his distinctive fusion of folk\, blues and roots\, which was compiled following two separate shows at The Wheatsheaf\, Adelaide during his ‘As The River Runs’ National Tour.” \nJess Parker & The Troubled Waters:\n“With a voice like honey poured over a thunder\, a howling\, beat up old Gretsch guitar and thumping animalistic drums\, Jess Parker &\nThe Troubled Waters mix their unique brew of dark Australiana and roaring swamp blues perfectly. After recording their debut EP – ‘Goin’ Swimmin’ at The Aviary in late 2017 and embarking on a a string of local and regional shows\, the momentum and force this Melbourne duos’ train is growing stronger and proving to be unstoppable.” \nSaturday January 11th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Matt Katsis + Jess Parker & The Troubled Waters\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:15pm.\nTix: $39 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or online here: https://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO. SUMMARY:Hailey Calvert (QLD) & Grim Fawkner
DESCRIPTION:Hailey is heading to Bendigo to play on a Blues Tram\, so we have jumped at the opportunity to host her and Grim Fawkner for a Sunday afternoon of live music at The Shiraz Republic. \nFree entry. Lunch from 12pm. Music 2PM-5PM. \n— \nHailey Calvert \nIts her warm and breathtaking blues voice together with impressive guitar skills and relatable stage presence\, as well as achingly honest song writing that makes each audience member feel like they are the only people in the room to hear Hailey Calvert’s stories. \nIt’s the same song writing style that saw Hailey take out the blues category in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition. With over 18\,000 entries from 20 countries\, it was a huge deal to be a winner alongside fellow Australians in other categories including Meg Mac and Birds of Tokyo. Two EP’s\, one album and countless charismatic live shows into her career\, Hailey Calvert is an independent performer showing no signs of slowing down. \nThe small Western Australian town she grew up in is a far cry from the places Hailey’s music has taken her. From tours in Australia supporting Stu Larsen\, to performing all over Ireland\, London and New York\, a highlight was a show at the famous NYC venue The Bitter End\, a place that has hosted performances from the likes of Ray Charles\, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell among many others. Hailey has also graced the stages of many of Australia’s favourite festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (three times)\, Queenscliff Music Festival\, Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival (four times) and Palm Creek Folk Festival (twice). \nInspired by the thoughts and worries she was waking up with at 3am\, Hailey Calvert’s 2016 fourth CD release ‘In the Hour of the Wolf’ is a cinematic sounding affair and Hailey’s most grown up songs to date. She stretches her legs in her new album with producer Brett Shaw playing around in genres making the album a darker\, grander affair than her previous releases.  With the album earning rave reviews\, Hailey is an independent performer making a lasting impression. \nIt always comes back to that voice; a breathtaking cross between Eva Cassidy and devilish deep blues. Hailey has the element of surprise as it’s never the voice people think will come out of her. \n— \nGrim Fawkner \nA regular at The Shiraz Republic\, Rambling man\, Grim Fawkner\, is no stranger to stages and streets across the globe and at home. The epitome of the itinerant musician\, he draws together tales and musings from his travels and is as likely to deliver them in soft ballad form as he is face-meltingly intricate and upbeat roots/country/blues. \n— \nAs always expect some great Shiraz Republic wines on pour\, Cornella Brewery beers on tap and a fully stocked bar with everything else. \nFood stall details tbd. Shuttle buses available from Bendigo & Heathcote. \nThe details:\n* Free Entry.\n* Shiraz Republic wines and Cornella Brewery craft beers on tap with producers available for chats\n* Fully-stocked bar with your regular favourite drinks and soft drinks also available\n* Pop-up food stall\n* Music 2PM – 5PM\n* Shuttle bus from Bendigo & Heathcote TBD

SUMMARY:Rory Phillips (NSW) plays Handle Bar
DESCRIPTION:Magnificent young guitarist and blues phenom Rory Phillips made a huge impression when he played Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival for the first time in 2019. He returns to Bendigo to play three shows in the one weekend\, including this one on Friday 28 February at Handle Bar (aka: Bendigo’s Backyard). \nMusic from 6pm – free entry! \nMore about Rory Phillips:\nWith a deep love of music flowing through his veins\, Rory Phillips is not your average 13-year-old. Even his musical influences don’t fit the mould of a usual teenager & after flicking through his eclectic playlist\, you could be forgiven for mistaking him as a child of the seventies. In fact\, most who meet him describe him as an “old soul”\, a badge he wears with pride.\nHaving first stepped onto a stage at age seven\, Rory has already achieved more than most & has his sights set high for the future. A gifted musician\, Rory is most comfortable with a guitar in his hands but also loves the microphone! Musically\, he sits anywhere in the realm of blues/Americana/alt-country & aside from his dynamic playing\, most say it is his confidence & stage presence which sets him apart from his peers. Bill Chambers has described Rory as “always displaying a professional enthusiasm way beyond his years\, and definitely has a way with an audience” & is just one of a long list of industry heavyweights to have invited Rory to share the stage with him.\nSnapshot Bio: Rory Phillips is a young man with a huge stage presence\, who will leave his audience impressed with his guitar skills & in love with his personality! At 13\, Rory has already achieved more than most and musically\, sits anywhere in the realm of blues/Americana/alt-country. Sets will include originals\, but also a mix of the classics he loves. \nLINKS\nWebsite: https://www.roryphillips.com.au/\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/RoryPhillipsAU/\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rorybphillipsmusic/

SUMMARY:Rory Phillips (NSW) plays the One Tree Hill Hotel
DESCRIPTION:Magnificent young guitarist and blues phenom Rory Phillips made a huge impression when he played Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival for the first time in 2019. He returns to Bendigo to play three shows in the one weekend\, including this one on Saturday 29 February at the One Tree Hill Hotel\, in one of Bendigo’s absolute best beer gardens. \nMusic from 7pm – free entry!

SUMMARY:Blues & Roots Summer Showcase/Fundraiser at The Rifle
DESCRIPTION:After 2019 gave us the most successful and exciting BB&RMF weekend to date\, we’re looking to kick 2020 off with a bang in what will be YEAR 10 of Bendigo’s biggest and best home-grown music festival – starting with our Summer Showcase/Fundraiser event at The Rifle Brigade Hotel on Sunday 1 March. \nThe packed list of acts to perform at this Showcase event will again include some of Bendigo’s best\, along with some fresh faces from the larger blues\, soul\, jazz\, folk and original music circuits who’ve put their respective hands up to support our not-for-profit community music festival – across two stages\, in the famous Rifle Carpark and the beautiful balcony overlooking Bendigo’s enviable arts precinct. \nAs always\, these artists are donating their time and talents\, as do the Festival’s volunteer committee and crew\, to help kick start the kitty to pay for the Festival itself\, to be held on November 5-8\, 2020. \nTo continue to fund this predominantly free festival\, your support and assistance is needed. So spread the word and bring a posse to the Rifle Brigade Hotel on March 1st and help grow the burgeoning music scene we’ve managed to revitalise together over the last few years in Central Victoria. \nOn behalf of our local venues\, local and visiting artists\, and all of us who enjoy a wide range of live music to choose from on a weekly basis\, ‘Thank You’ for your ongoing support of grass-roots music events! \nTickets for the March 1st Showcase event are available at the door on the day and are $20 for adults\, $5 for under-18s (with under-12s free). \nThe live music will start at 11:30am sharp and continue through till 9pm.  For full program and further info\, please hit the “Going” button on the facebook event page and keep an eye out for updates.
