SUMMARY:Hailey Calvert (QLD) & Grim Fawkner
DESCRIPTION:Hailey is heading to Bendigo to play on a Blues Tram\, so we have jumped at the opportunity to host her and Grim Fawkner for a Sunday afternoon of live music at The Shiraz Republic. \nFree entry. Lunch from 12pm. Music 2PM-5PM. \n— \nHailey Calvert \nIts her warm and breathtaking blues voice together with impressive guitar skills and relatable stage presence\, as well as achingly honest song writing that makes each audience member feel like they are the only people in the room to hear Hailey Calvert’s stories. \nIt’s the same song writing style that saw Hailey take out the blues category in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition. With over 18\,000 entries from 20 countries\, it was a huge deal to be a winner alongside fellow Australians in other categories including Meg Mac and Birds of Tokyo. Two EP’s\, one album and countless charismatic live shows into her career\, Hailey Calvert is an independent performer showing no signs of slowing down. \nThe small Western Australian town she grew up in is a far cry from the places Hailey’s music has taken her. From tours in Australia supporting Stu Larsen\, to performing all over Ireland\, London and New York\, a highlight was a show at the famous NYC venue The Bitter End\, a place that has hosted performances from the likes of Ray Charles\, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell among many others. Hailey has also graced the stages of many of Australia’s favourite festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (three times)\, Queenscliff Music Festival\, Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival (four times) and Palm Creek Folk Festival (twice). \nInspired by the thoughts and worries she was waking up with at 3am\, Hailey Calvert’s 2016 fourth CD release ‘In the Hour of the Wolf’ is a cinematic sounding affair and Hailey’s most grown up songs to date. She stretches her legs in her new album with producer Brett Shaw playing around in genres making the album a darker\, grander affair than her previous releases.  With the album earning rave reviews\, Hailey is an independent performer making a lasting impression. \nIt always comes back to that voice; a breathtaking cross between Eva Cassidy and devilish deep blues. Hailey has the element of surprise as it’s never the voice people think will come out of her. \n— \nGrim Fawkner \nA regular at The Shiraz Republic\, Rambling man\, Grim Fawkner\, is no stranger to stages and streets across the globe and at home. The epitome of the itinerant musician\, he draws together tales and musings from his travels and is as likely to deliver them in soft ballad form as he is face-meltingly intricate and upbeat roots/country/blues. \n— \nAs always expect some great Shiraz Republic wines on pour\, Cornella Brewery beers on tap and a fully stocked bar with everything else. \nFood stall details tbd. Shuttle buses available from Bendigo & Heathcote. \nThe details:\n* Free Entry.\n* Shiraz Republic wines and Cornella Brewery craft beers on tap with producers available for chats\n* Fully-stocked bar with your regular favourite drinks and soft drinks also available\n* Pop-up food stall\n* Music 2PM – 5PM\n* Shuttle bus from Bendigo & Heathcote TBD

SUMMARY:Rory Phillips (NSW) plays Handle Bar
DESCRIPTION:Magnificent young guitarist and blues phenom Rory Phillips made a huge impression when he played Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival for the first time in 2019. He returns to Bendigo to play three shows in the one weekend\, including this one on Friday 28 February at Handle Bar (aka: Bendigo’s Backyard). \nMusic from 6pm – free entry! \nMore about Rory Phillips:\nWith a deep love of music flowing through his veins\, Rory Phillips is not your average 13-year-old. Even his musical influences don’t fit the mould of a usual teenager & after flicking through his eclectic playlist\, you could be forgiven for mistaking him as a child of the seventies. In fact\, most who meet him describe him as an “old soul”\, a badge he wears with pride.\nHaving first stepped onto a stage at age seven\, Rory has already achieved more than most & has his sights set high for the future. A gifted musician\, Rory is most comfortable with a guitar in his hands but also loves the microphone! Musically\, he sits anywhere in the realm of blues/Americana/alt-country & aside from his dynamic playing\, most say it is his confidence & stage presence which sets him apart from his peers. Bill Chambers has described Rory as “always displaying a professional enthusiasm way beyond his years\, and definitely has a way with an audience” & is just one of a long list of industry heavyweights to have invited Rory to share the stage with him.\nSnapshot Bio: Rory Phillips is a young man with a huge stage presence\, who will leave his audience impressed with his guitar skills & in love with his personality! At 13\, Rory has already achieved more than most and musically\, sits anywhere in the realm of blues/Americana/alt-country. Sets will include originals\, but also a mix of the classics he loves. \nLINKS\nWebsite: https://www.roryphillips.com.au/\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/RoryPhillipsAU/\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rorybphillipsmusic/

SUMMARY:William Alexander and Nathan Power at The Old Church
DESCRIPTION:William Alexander brings the songs of his latest EP “Garlic Pickin’ Time” to the Old Church in Bendigo. \nThe captivating voice and guitar picking of 23 year old folk/western singer William Alexander are fast becoming more and more recognizable in the Australian music industry through his roaming performance tours across many stages as well as through many a turntable as folks go about their lives with his AIR Award nominated record “The Kid From Bourke” painting the backdrop. \nFolks will now be able possess a new piece of work from the yodelling songster in the form of his brand-new extended play release\, “Garlic Pickin’ Time”. The EP was released on September 20th 2019 through Melbourne based independent record label Green South Records. It is the second offering from the partnership of Alexander and recording engineer and owner of Sound Recordings Alex Bennett (C.W. Stoneking\, Archer). Recorded live in the Campbells Creek studio on Saturday February 2nd 2019 with Cat Moser (Cat and Clint) returning to her regular role on the fiddle as well as Steve James (Slippry Sid) on the Hawaiian style steel guitar and dobro. \n… \nMelbourne folk singer-songwriter Nathan Power kicks off 2020 with a little national tour to launch new single ‘Wildfire’\, a boppy bluegrass number dwelling on how love can burn and die with little rhyme or reason. \n2020 sees the launch of Nathan’s second album and shows around the country including at Nightjar Festival and Knox Festival. \nLinks:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCIQnzjJye8\nwww.nathanpowermusic.com\nwww.facebook.com/nathanpowermusic \n2019 was busy for Melbourne folk artist Nathan Power with international appearances\, two national tours and almost a hundred shows including slots at Yackandandah Folk Festival\, Bendigo Blues\, Nimbin Roots and Frankston Waterfront Festival. \nBorrowing from the folk\, blues and bluegrass worlds\, Nathan’s music is dark and rich\, combining childhood stories of growing up Africa with a cynical take on modern life. Think Leonard Cohen meets Lloyd Cole\, wrapped in a toe-tapping bluegrass band including double bass\, mandolin and guitar.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Easter Blues Tram w/Karrie Hayward + Miguel Rios
DESCRIPTION:A super-talented young singer/songwriter from Queensland\, in town for Easter Blues Bender\, returns to ride the rails while a talented singer/songwriter from Melbourne makes his Blues Tram debut. \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being serenaded by two great acts: \nKarrie Hayward:\nWhen you blend the rich\, soulful vocal tones with the vibrant\, percussive timbre of a guitar\, you get Karrie Hayward. Drawing inspiration from blues music and guitar heroes such as John Mayer\, Buddy Guy\, BB King; to the more ‘chilled’ sounds of Jack Johnson and Tash Sultana\, Karrie’s own style is a blend of the best parts of folk\, pop\, alt and blues. \nMiguel Rios (Running Blue):\nRunning Blue is the musical moniker for songwriter and singer Miguel Rios and fiddle player Ash Jones. Rios\, grew up in the Queensland tablelands\, beautiful and taunting country\, Rios\, part Mexican\, part native American\, writes songs which are lyrically driven\, the words are both simple and incisive\, a dichotomy matched by a vocal style that is pure and unforced\, yet raw. These are detailed and deeply personal stories but they also thrum with universal truths. This gifted\, highly original singer-songwriter gives soulful voice to the longings and dark comedies of human striving that play out against the natural world. His gift has been burnished by the accompaniment of his close friend\, Ash Jones. Rios and this extraordinarily talented fiddler know each other inside out\, and it shows in the way Jones’s playing weaves in and out of the music like smoke through sunbeams. \nSaturday April 11th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Karrie Hayward + Miguel Rios\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:15pm.\nTix: $39 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or online here: https://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO. SUMMARY:CANCELLED Tony J King plays Rocks Underground
DESCRIPTION:**Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions this event has been cancelled** \nOld school blues and original ‘murder ballads’ from legendary Tony J King will feature in the April edition of our “Dinner & Blues” sessions for 2020. Settle in to Rocks Underground\, with accomplished blues musicians providing the soundtrack to an exceptional culinary experience.\n(Updated menu info to be provided soon – watch this space!) \nNot dining? That’s OK\, pop in and enjoy a funky beverage while listening to some funky tunes. \nMore about our featured artist:\n“Having grown up in the tough\, migrant\, working-class northern suburbs of South Australia in the sixties and seventies\, King was exposed to the musical tastes of other British migrants – names such as Muddy Waters\, Bob Dylan\, Howling Wolf\, Leadbelly and Robert Johnson. He later earned a living as a truck driver\, storeman\, labourer\, salesman and teacher and has drawn upon this myriad of experiences as fodder for his song-writing.\nWith a few stories\, an old guitar and kick drum\, Tony J King creates a ramshackle music that has its roots in the street-corner blues and folk of yesteryear. Slow-burnin’\, low-fi urban myths\, murder ballads\, half-truths\, dark gospel and random fascinations are represented in quirky musical tales honed from a pre-occupation with the unusual\, the exotic and the downright bizarre.”

His versatility as a performer sees him at ease with ensembles or solo\, delving deep into soul\, jazz\, and rock to combine these genres with his distinctive voice\, style\, and performance.\nFronting rock bands across Australia since he was 16 he’s been called on by some of Australia’s most iconic bands to front their gigs when they’ve been missing a lead singer. His initiation into the world of music began in Geelong supporting Australia’s finest touring bands (AC/DC\, Ayres Rock\, Little River Band\, Buffalo\, Cold Chisel\, Dragon\, to name but a few). SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Luke Watt + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being serenaded by two brilliant acts: \nLuke Watt is a folk/blues guitarist and songwriter described by ABC National as “Raw and mercurial\, the real deal\,” and by Lloyd Spiegel as “A master of his craft.”\nDespite the experiences of touring his last album Hill End Ruin throughout Europe and the U.S\, Luke Watt’s new record is inspired by stories based much closer to home. Wild Graces is a collection of songs inspired by\, written and recorded in his now home of Central Victoria. The record was then mixed by long-time collaborator Nick Huggins (Jen Cloher\, Skipping Girl Vinegar\, Whitley). Luke’s folk and blues guitar playing carries songs of failed gold diggers\, small town tragedies and feuds between cranky old men. Wild Graces is an album from a touring artist who set up home and found stories worth telling. \nAll the way from the heart of the deep south comes the sound of authenticity cobbled together by three of the finest purveyors of twenty first century blues.
