SUMMARY:Chris Jagger (UK) live at Handle Bar\, Bendigo
DESCRIPTION:This is a special gig indeed\, in a very special space\, as Chris Jagger (UK)\, flying in for a whirlwind tour\, will play Handle Bar for an intimate crowd on Friday evening\, 24 March 2017! \nChris Jagger Music:\nChris’s career\, unlike his brother (Mick) has spanned many fields in the artistic spectrum\, from clothes design and theatre to journalism. He has appeared in repertory at The Citizen’s Theatre in Glasgow (his first play there was with one Pierce Brosnan)\, Nottingham Playhouse and the ICA in London as well as in TV and film. He has written for various magazines and newspapers including The Daily Telegraph\, The Guardian\, the Mail on Sunday and Rolling StoneHis first records were made during the 1970’s for David Geffen of Asylum Records in Los Angeles and he toured the USA and the UK.He revitalised his song writing in the late 1980’s when he worked in France as lyricist for producer Franck Langolf [Vanessa Paradis] and helped brother Mick out on the Stones acclaimed albums “Dirty Work” and then later “Steel Wheels.”Chris decided to then concentrate on his own material and the result was the critically acclaimed Sequel C.D. ‘Atcha!’ in 1994\, a mix of Cajun style with Chris’s individual brand of song writing. Acclaimed and respected music critic Tony Parsons in the Telegraph compared his lyrics to those of the famed Sammy Cahn. Contributions came from David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) on ‘Lhasa Town\, Leo Sayer and a touch of brother Mick on ‘Stand Up for The Foot.’ This record was later released in the US by Curb Records as ‘Rock the Zydeco’ where Chris and his band promoted the record on the Conan O’Brien Show for NBC.Additionally he arranged the music for the Bosnian charity concert – “Bop for Bosnia” -at the BBC in Studio One with Dave Stewart and David Gilmour and two subsequent concerts for Tibet in Battersea Park and Alexandria Park in North London. In 1996 Chris recorded an acoustic album\, ‘From Lhasa To Lewisham’ with associates Ben Waters and Charlie Hart and there followed ‘Channel Fever’ with the Atcha! Band.Act of Faith’ which was released in 2005 on the Hannover-based label SPV\,has also brought Chris and his music to a wider audience in Europe\, Australia\, Japan and Canada where he appeared at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2007.Besides writing and touring Europe with his band.Chris has recently written and presented a three part series for BBC Radio on Alexis Korner\, the pioneering blues musician and broadcaster. He has also finished a film for SKY ARTS on the blues in Austin Texas with guest contributions from some of the finest and most respected blues musicians including Muddy Waters pianist Pine Top Perkins\, Hubert Sumlin who worked with blues singer Howlin’ Wolf and guitarist Jimmy Vaughan. We catch up with ninety three year old Pinetop as he visits with brother Mick and Chuck Leavell backstage at a Rolling Stones show in Austin TX and reveal stories from the heydays of Chicago blues. The film was a direct result of a radio show that Chris co-hosts from Austin\, ‘The Blueseum Of Fine Art’. \nFriday March 24th\n6pm – FREE ENTRY\nLive at the Handle Bar – 73 Mitchell Street\, enter through Get Naked Espresso Bar.

SUMMARY:Archer live@The Old Church on the Hill w/Graciana Holland
DESCRIPTION:After missing out on having Archer play at Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival in 2016\, we’re chuffed to welcome him to The Old Church on the Hill for an intimate concert on Fri 17 March 2017.\nWith a support set from Graciana Holland\, this will be a truly special night on the tunes! \nAbout our artists: \nIn the 21st century\, Archer is a true rarity. His weathered blues are his stories—harvested from the raw distance that passes under his heels.\nArcher’s songs follow the seams of Australia’s valleys and mountain ranges\, songs driven by a restless and pure geography. A craft honed under the open sky—from Murray River picking crews to the remote northern reaches of the Australian continent. \nGraciana Holland\nGrowing up with The Hollands! and touring full time\, Graciana was given the opportunity to explore new cultures and traditions\, traveling throughout the USA\, Canada\, SE Asia and Australia. She is an accomplished songwriter and composer with work appearing on The Hollands! albums and her own single\, Caged Bird\, released in 2015. She plays guitar\, ukulele\, and piano but her voice is the stand out. With a delicate delivery\, Graciana keeps listeners on the edge of their seats wanting to hear more. \nThe Old Church on the Hill is located on the corner of Harkness and Russell Streets\, Quarry Hill\, Bendigo.\nThe Singer/Songwriter Showcase events\, staged at the Old Church by the BB&RMF crew on a semi-regular basis\, are an opportunity to enjoy a House Concert vibe in a public venue. The door charge is generally $15 for adults ($10 concession) and\, although refreshments are available for sale\, the focus is on THE MUSIC. Proceeds from drink sales go to supporting Bendigo Sustainability Group – BSG and also support our Festival to keep presenting these magnificent musicians for your listening pleasure. Sound production is supplemented at the Old Church on the Hill by our friends at Muso’s Stuff and 100% of the door takings are able to be shared between the performers with thanks to our valued sponsors at Kensey Care (www.kenseycare.com.au).

It’s about leaving a legacy\nThat in fifty years’ time\, someone can put these records on and learn something about the spirit of our great country\, in the same way we do when we read The Man From Snowy River. ” \nUpon its release Van Diemen’s land debut at #4 on the National Aria Charts.\nVan Diemen’s Land was nominated for Best Blues n Roots album in the 2014 ARIA awards.\nVan Diemen’s Land won best Australian Blues Album 2015 and Russell Morris won best male vocalist at the Chain awards \nIn 2015 Russell Released the third Album in his Blues Trilogy Red Dirt – Red Heart Debuting at 6 on the National Aria Charts and still going strong in the charts today hitting the #1 on the National Aria Blues/Jazz Charts. \nRed Dirt – Red Heart tells a story of the Australian interior. Any history of Australia albeit very brief\, must include the people who have inhabited this wonderful country for at least 40\,000 years. This album goes on to tell the stories of two bushrangers\, another about a beautiful town\, a song about a loner\, a recluse\, and an escape artist (Goal that is)\, a snake and the spectacular Nullabour Desert. We have also included some of our great indigenous heroes in the hope that we can share their stories. \n**Please note the end time is not confirmed**

SUMMARY:The Old Married Couple and Graciana Holland at The Basement Bar
DESCRIPTION:The Old Married Couple and Graciana Holland are teaming up for a night of jazzy tunes at The Basement Bar Bendigo \nGRACIANA HOLLAND\nGrowing up in the Folk musical family\, The Hollands! and touring on the road full time for all of her adolescence\, Graciana Holland was given the opportunity to explore and experience new cultures\, traditions and music\, all of which has influenced her songwriting process. \nGraciana has traveled extensively through out the USA\, Canada\, Southeast Asia and Australia performing and honing her gifts and talents as a musician. She is an accomplished songwriter and composer with work appearing on three The Hollands! albums including the title track for The Hollands! album\, Over Land and Leas (2013) and her own hit single\, Caged Bird\, released in 2015. She has been surrounded by the traditions of folk and Americana music and hints of that practice are woven into her songwriting but her first love is a combination Jazz and Pop and she finds ways to keep those elements on the forefront. The mixture of the three end up creating a unique sound all her own. She plays guitar\, ukulele\, and piano and works with electronic beats but her voice is the stand out. With a delicate and pure delivery\, Graciana’s sound keeps listeners on the edge of their seats wanting to hear more. \nTHE OLD MARRIED COUPLE\nRiley and Katie Beech are only in their 20s but they’re already an Old Married Couple. Vintage in style and sound\, The Old Married Couple combine a witty songwriting style with a distinctive kazoo and fun infused swing-folk sound. \nQuirky\, cute and clever\, The Old Married Couple are a retro styled acoustic folk band who sing stories of life and love from the perspective of young lovers.

SUMMARY:Miriam Lieberman Trio - Bendigo Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Miriam Lieberman is a singer songwriter known not only for her unmistakable voice and songwriting\, but for playing the 21 string West African harp – the kora. She draws her influences from far and wide – she’s given concerts in cities in West Africa and peace festivals in Japan\, she’s studied and performed with Mali’s multi Grammy award winning kora player Toumani Diabate\, and has performed from the South of Mexico to Ecuador\, to Istanbul and India\, as well as far and wide in her home Australia. Her songs seamlessly blend contemporary folk with West African influences and are in essence a collection of stories\, beautifully told through strings\, powerful lyrics and her emotive voice. \nMiriam is joined by exceptional string players – violinist Lara Goodridge (FourPlay/Baby et Lulu) and bassist Liz Frencham. Adding their sublime strings and lush vocal harmonies\, there is a chemistry between these musicians and their instruments that open out the songs to a soaring beautiful soundscape. \nMiriam is releasing her much anticipated fifth album ‘Full Circle’ at The Old Church\, with her trio. Having worked once again with talented producer Josh Schuberth\, Adams and Goodridge\, ‘Full Circle’ is an album harking back to the early work of Joni Mitchell\, infused with a feminine perspective and the light and shade of the human experience – rhythm\, the stars\, the sea\, love and the impermanence of things are ever present in this work. \nSee http://www.bendigofolkclub.com for more details.

SUMMARY:Harry Manx
DESCRIPTION:Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival with Capital Venues and Events presents Harry Manx in Concert. \nHarry Manx has been one of the most successful international touring musicians ever to grace stages in Australia. Returning in September and October for over 30 concert dates\, this deeply original multi-instrumentalist has entertained audiences in more than 10 extensive tours since 2001. \nThe explanation is simple. Harry’s created his own genre\, often referred to as the ‘Mystissippi Blues’. His mesmerizing sound is an organic fusion of eastern musical traditions with the Blues. The result is an expressive\, moving and unforgettable new world. \nHis unique toolbox is a fascinating range of conventional acoustic and electric guitars\, banjo\, harmonica\, stomp box\, and the Mohan Veena\, created by Harry’s Indian mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. His award-winning songs ‘create musical short stories that wed the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas’. \nA worldwide festival favorite\, Harry’s 13 albums and ceaseless touring have seen him earn a slew of Maple Leaf\, Juno and Canadian Folk Awards\, nominations\, and accolades from musicians and fans alike. \n“Watching Harry play tonight I feel like I learned something new…….” Bruce Springsteen\, @ the International Guitar Festival\, New York City \nIn February 2013\, Harry’s 20-stringed Mohan Veena\, was stolen from an airport carousel in Chicago. By the next day over 3 million people and the AP news service had spread the word and put Harry and his little-known instrument on the world map! Global relief ensued when police found the culprit and Harry was reunited with his Mohan Veena. \nFebruary 2014\, saw the release of Harry’s 12th studio recording – ‘Ohm Suite Ohm’. It features Harry’s ‘Bollywood electric slide guitar’\, instrumentals\, original songs\, a cover of John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’\, plus guest vocalists and international collaborators. \nAnd in 2015 prolific Harry released his newest album – the acclaimed “20 Strings and the Truth”\, a mostly instrumental album that pays homage to his beloved Mohan Veena. \nHarry will be accompanied by Sydney-based pianist Clayton Doley for many of the dates.
