SUMMARY:Lloyd Spiegel - Bendigo CD Launch
DESCRIPTION:Lloyd Spiegel plays at the Old Church on the Hill on Saturday\, August 12. Doors at 7.30pm.\nLocal boy\, Animal Time front man and 2004 Lazenby Young Guitarist award winner\, Sean Nudl is supporting.\nTickets: https://www.stickytickets.com.au/52271/lloyd_spiegel_this_time_tomorrow_album_launch__bendigo.aspx \nBlues Maestro on the hill – from Bendigo Weekly\, by Simon Wooldridge \nBendigo holds good memories for Australian blues icon Lloyd Spiegel.\n“Bendigo was the first place I ever went outside of Melbourne to play\, when I was 11. At that age\, it felt like a ‘tour’.” Spiegel told the Weekly. He reckons he’s now played here about 50 times.\nIt’s not only gigs that bring him here though.\n“I go to Bendigo quite often without a guitar. It’s been a favourite spot for me for many years to get away for a few days. In part that’s because the blues is a strong genre there\, so I feel at home\, but also it has the mix of history and cafe lifestyle I crave.”\nSpiegel’s next formal visit is Saturday\, August 12 at the Old Church on the Hill on one of the final legs of his current Australian tour.\nLittle rest though; he’s off to Canada at the end of August\, followed by another round of Australian venues.\nThis punishing-looking schedule is in support of new album\, This Time Tomorrow\, which was released in early July. It’s his first studio album since Tangled Brew in 2010.\nSpiegel’s approach to this album was a bit different.\n“Usually I tour tracks for months before recording them\, but this CD was made prior to any of the tracks being heard or performed. That means that you go in blindly hoping people like the songs. It’s quite daunting\,” he said.\n“Night one of the tour in Sydney\, I was trying to get that point across to the audience and for some reason at that moment I felt it was best explained by saying ‘You know how you never know if your kids are ugly till others start recoiling in horror? That’s how I feel about these songs. I’m hoping they’re not ugly children.’”\nIt seems they’re not ugly children though; the album has been rapturously received by public and media alike.\n“Spiegel is an artist who understands how to get a guitar to sing and cry and scream\,” Benjamin Smith said in his Amplify review of This Time Tomorrow.\n“I find more and more these days that the best reactions I get are not to the blistering guitar tracks but to the songwriter tracks that are simple in their delivery.” Spiegel said.\n“That surprises me because so much of my career has been based on the guitar\, but maybe it means I’m improving as a writer. Either way\, performing the new tracks has opened-up a new chapter with new stories and new ideas.”\nLloyd Spiegel has come a long way since Sunday afternoons at the Station Hotel in Prahran as a young boy sitting on a milk crate\, watching and listening in awe to the likes of Dutch Tilders and Geoff Achison.\nSpiegel is approaching blues legend status domestically\, and has a dedicated international following. He recently toured the Czech Republic for the first time.\nSpiegel’s shows are intense\, albeit littered with insightful and humorous anecdotes. His guitar playing though\, is just something else. A great night is in store.

SUMMARY:Georgia State Line EP Tour w/ Will Alexander + Cat Canteri
DESCRIPTION:Georgia State Line are an Americana collective hailing from various parts of regional Victoria. The group have enjoyed notable performances\, including: shows alongside country icon Bill Chambers at the Tamworth Country Music Festival 2017\, billed as part of National Folk Festival 2017 gaining nods from Paul Gough (ABC Radio National)\, plus have played Terang Country Music Festival 2017 alongside Golden Guitar winners Beccy Cole and Fanny Lumsden. The group will release their debut EP\, ‘Heaven Knows’ on July 7th\, celebrating with a run of Victorian shows to follow. \n“Many Australian artists refer to themselves as Americana or Alt Country these days\, but very few deliver the real thing as well as Georgia State Line. Hailing from Melbourne but sounding like Texas or Tennessee\, this band represents the true essence of today’s country music.” – Bill Chambers \nWilliam Alexander + Cat Canteri will be supporting. \nWilliam Alexander\nWilliam Alexander is a young folk singer with an old soul. Brought up and inspired by older songs William seeks to keep tradition alive as well as bring forth new stories in the form of his poetic\, ballad-style songwriting. Born in Bourke\, NSW Alexander spent his youth in the red dirt outback before heading to the bush outside Dubbo\, NSW to live in a small community. William was no stranger to the songs of early Bob Dylan and was inspired from a very young age to play guitar\, sing and explore the rich history of rural American (and Australian) music. \nCat Canteri\nCat Canteri is a true musician in the sense that she lives for the music\, primarily as a solo artist but also with a rich history of collaboration with other bands and songwriters. In 2014 Cat released her debut solo album When We Were Young which shone a spotlight on her folk meets country meets indie-rock style. Her songs documented real life situations and experiences – often with a brave\, personal and candid honesty – framed\, coloured and shaped by exquisite playing. \nDoors from 6.30pm\n$15 on the door!

SUMMARY:Lily & King + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies\, live@the Vine
DESCRIPTION:Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival favourites\, Lily & King will fill the Golden Vine with their unique brand of musical madness on Sat 26 August\, supported by their Bendigo mates from a bygone era Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies.\nMusic from 9pm. Door charge only $10. Get in early for a good spot – this is a gig you will be telling your friends about after its all said and done. \nLily and King + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies = kooky medicinal music and mayhem. \nLily & King’s new CD:\nLily and King\, are celebrating the release of their second album: ‘Bless This Life’\, produced by ARIA award winning guitarist Matt Walker.\n Lily Sutton delivers a luring\, sensual haze of smoky-opiate vocals and rapturously disrespectful brass (playing trombone\, trumpet and tuba throughout)\, while Tony J. King slams a rhythmic driving junkyard of guitars and percussion.\n The twelve track album\, which has a distinctly Australian flavour (“Bondi Junction Baby” and “Brett Whiteley’s Woman”)\, takes listeners to tangled spaces – from the all-in bluegrass orgy of the title track to mesmerising and delicate seaside waltzes\, passionate wailing klezmer (with violinist Alex Burkoy-Tinpan Orange)\, and crunchy down-home blues.\n Walker’s inimitably understated and honest production style underpins ‘Bless This Life’\, and captures all the energy and wild romance of the duo’s live performances. It is an absolute must listen.\n Lily and King are touring the country to showcase ‘Bless this Life’\, which is available for purchase from the Lily and King website or from shows and festivals. \nAlawishus Jones & The Outright Lies:\nLet Alawishus\, Wilby & Cleitus take you folks all the way\nback to the year o’nineteen and thirty. They’ll likely tell\nyou stories about the old times and sing\nyou some authentic rural blues\, rag tunes & maybe even some old time spirituals.\nWhat can we expect from AJ&theOLs – Old blues.\n– Maybe some pre blues stuff that contains elements essential to the birth of blues like work song\, field holler & ragged time\n– Mostly what you can expect though is 3 guys having a lot of fun\n– Guitar\, drums\, washboard\, bass\, trumpet\, harmonica & ukulele\n– Stories and anecdotes that could have historical significance or might be outright lies

SUMMARY:Hugo Race & Michelangelo Russo
DESCRIPTION:Hugo Race (founding member of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) and Michelangelo Russo are no strangers to either Hooker or the blues. Hailed as a supreme influence on the music of their band Hugo Race & The True Spirit\, Race and Russo’s reimagining of Hooker is simultaneously blues and ambient\, a homage to one of the greats of rock and roll prehistory. Recorded in a single\, continuous day and night live session at the Berlin studio of Einsturzende Neubauten engineer Boris Wilsdorf\, this is an epic album of sonic sorcery suspended in time and place on the 100th anniversary of Hooker’s birth. \nHugo Race is a prolific and visionary performer. A founding member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds and the seminal Australian 80s cult band The Wreckery\, Hugo has released over 20 albums and collaborated with artists from Sao Paolo to Rome\, Berlin\, London\, Tucson\, Brussels\, Warsaw\, Mali\, Africa and beyond. Born in Melbourne\, Hugo has spent most of the last 25 years living in Italy\, France\, Germany\, UK and the USA.
