SUMMARY:Matt Katsis EP Launch at The Old Church on the Hill Bendigo
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne based Blues & Roots powerhouse Matt Katsis makes his Old Church on the Hill debut\, as part of his latest EP launch tour. Support acts: Luck Louise (Mornington Peninsula) and Erica Hawkey (Bendigo). \nMatt Katsis:\nMelbourne singer/songwriter & guitarist Matt Katsis’ music ranges from delicate folk balladry to foot stomping down-home blues. \nThose who have seen Matt live will recall his raw vocals and command of the acoustic guitar. Matched with a one-man-band approach to his performances through the use of percussive elements of the guitar\, stomp box\, tambourine and creating loop layers – this together has become the cornerstone of Matt’s live blend of blues\, roots & folk-stirred music\, which has been heard on numerous Australian stages and festival line-ups and at iconic venues. \nThe Old Church on the Hill is located on the corner of Harkness and Russell Streets\, Quarry Hill\, Bendigo.\nThe Singer/Songwriter Showcase events\, staged there by the BB&RMF crew on a semi-regular basis\, are an opportunity to enjoy a House Concert vibe in a public venue. The door charge is generally $15 for adults ($10 for Friends of the Festival members) and\, although refreshments are available for sale\, the focus is on THE MUSIC.\nSound production is provided at the Old Church on the Hill by our good friends R&J DJ & Entertainment (facebook.com/rjdjandentertainment) and supplimented when needed by our supportive partners at Muso’s Stuff Bendigo (facebook.com/Musos.Stuff).\n100% of the door takings are able to be shared between the performers with thanks to our valued sponsors at Kensey Care (facebook.com/KenseyCare).

SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Marisa Quigley + Skip
DESCRIPTION:Our October 2017 Tram will feature two of the most powerful voices we’ve ever hosted and two highly emotive performers who create a memorable experience for their respective audiences\, every time out. Beechworth-based powerhouse Marisa Rae Quigley and Bendigo’s own living legend Albert Skipper (aka Skip) are set to give you a Blues Tram ride you won’t soon forget. \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nMarisa Quigley:\nMarisa Quigley is an award-winning Australian blues/roots singer and songwriter\, solo artist\, and cabaret performer. With her charismatic stage presence and powerhouse delivery\, the husky-voiced chanteuse has drawn comparisons with Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. Absolutely at home on the stage\, with her irreverent wit and deft lyrics\, Marisa has audiences in stitches one minute\, and moved to tears the next.\nHer songwriting influences are as diverse as Tom Waits and The Eagles\, and her songs span the gamut from haunting to heartfelt to hilarious. With an eclectic blend of blues/roots and alt-country/folk\, a wink and a nudge\, a tickle and a poke\, her act is soulful\, fun\, endearing—and highly entertaining. \nSkip:\nA Bendigo icon\, Skip is one of the most respected musicians and songwriters in Central Victoria as well as a valued contributor to the community\, through the work he does through his revolutionary music school ‘Rock Pride Music’. Skip’s solo performances are a joyous celabration o0ne minute and a soulful lament the next – always moving. \nSaturday October 21st\nBlues Tram\, feat: Marisa Quigley + Skip\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:15pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or\nhttp://www.bendigotourism.com/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks are available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. For the enjoyment of all patrons\, any rowdy or loud behaviour will not be tolerated. If you don’t think you can resist talking during performances\, perhaps this event is not for you. Event management reserves the right to refuse admission or evict patrons if requests to manage noise levels or other behaviour are not complied with; in this unlikely event\, tickets of offenders will be forfeited and no refund will be available.

SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Genevieve Chadwick + David Spry
DESCRIPTION:The Friday night Blues Tram (as part of this year’s Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival) is a cracker! Genevieve Chadwick makes a welcome return to the rails\, while Darwin’s David Spry makes his Blues Tram debut! \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nGenevieve Chadwick:\nImagine if Janis Joplin and John Lee Hooker had a baby together; musically\, this girl would be the offspring of that union.\nShe looks like an angel… roars like a lion… and plays guitar like a demon! She’s been likened to the great Janis Joplin… ‘a female John Butler’. In his article at australianstage.com.au\, reviewer Lloyd Bradford Syke called her “Australia’s answer to Melissa Etheridge”.\nEvery once in a while an artist emerges who touches the very soul of an audience. Genevieve Chadwick is such an artist.\nWithout doubt\, Genevieve is an extraordinary performer who exudes raw energy by the bucket load. She has the power to bring an entire venue to a complete standstill. Her own original brand of Blues and Roots – poignant songs full of rich melodies\, sung with a voice that’s confoundingly gravel-like and smooth all at once – has given this singer/songwriter from the NSW South Coast a loyal and ever-growing army of followers. \nDavid Spry:\nOriginal singer/songwriter\, David Spry draws influence from his world travels and relates this to his Indigenous Australian heritage through heartfelt\, powerful and uplifting songs. From a long line of storytellers\, David uses his inherited gift and shares his experiences in a contemporary blend of Roots and Blues music with a uniquely upbeat vibe. David has made his mark on the Australian music scene in the most recent years sharing stages alongside talents such as Archie Roach\, Michael Franti & Spearhead\, Busby Marou\, Ash Grunwald\, Tex Perkins\, The Cat Empire and Jeff Lang. With recent performances include Blue Mountains Music Festival\, Nannup Music Festival\, Darwin Festival\, National Indigenous Music Awards\, Nimbin Roots Festival\, Caloundra Music Festival and St Kilda Festival\, David is solidifying the fresh new sound of Indigenous contemporary music. \nFriday Nov 10th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Genevieve Chadwick (NSW) + David Spry (NT)\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 7pm\, returning 9:30pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or http://www.bendigotourism.com/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks are available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. SUMMARY:Summer Gumbo at The Capital
DESCRIPTION:Take a trip through the history of Blues music\, with Mississippi Bluesman Terry ‘Harmonica’ Bean. \nAssisting along the way will be some of Melbourne’s finest blues players: Jules Boult & The Redeembers\, along with the incredibly talented vocal stylings of IsIseula Hingano. \nSetting the mood for the show will be one of Australia’s most authentic and exciting blues bandsThree Kings. This is a marquee show\, not to be missed! \nTERRY ‘HARMONICA’ BEAN is an American blues harmonica virtuoso\, guitarist and songwriter. He has released seven albums since 2001\, and appeared in three film documentaries charting present day blues experiences.Terry Bean has dedicated himself to promoting older blues stylings\, such as Delta and Hill Country Blues. “What’s stimulating to me\,” he said\, “is people hearing the blues played like they used to hear it.” Terry’s performances are steeped in history whilst being as raucously entertaining as a late night “juke joint”. \nJULES BOULT is an award winning singer\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and international recording artist. A universally admired blues and jazz entertainer – his music remains true to the blues tradition – and his effortless demeanour\, humour and performance style has been closely linked with that of the genre’s legendary predecessors. \nISEULA HINGANO stands as a sublimely gifted blues\, soul and gospel singer possessing a style imbued with deep musicality and bare-faced allure. Her stellar career as a performer and songwriter includes performances at Australia’s biggest blues music festivals and industry events\, a chart topping album on The Australian Blues & Roots charts\, as well as a swag of highly coveted awards. \nTHREE KINGS officially formed in 2011 by Ian Collard (vocals\, guitar\, harmonica)\, Benny Peters (vocals and guitar)\, and Jason Liu Soon (drums)\, Three Kings’ self titled debut album took out the award for best blues CD in The Age Victorian music awards only a fortnight after release. The album entered the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Chart at number two before shooting up to first place. \nThree Kings’ hard-hitting\, greasy blues style takes you on a dangerous joy ride through the back roads and juke joints of American music history\, combining the sounds of artists like Kid Thomas\, John Lee Hooker\, Slim Harpo and Jerry McCain with their own original spin.” \nTickets from The Capital Box offfice or online here: http://www.thecapital.com.au/Whats_On/BBRMF_Summer_Gumbo

SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Simon Wright + Miss Whiskey
DESCRIPTION:The Saturday Afternoon Blues Tram (as part of this year’s Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival) will be a contrast in Styles\, and full of fun! Both acts\, a reggae/soul/funk loopster and an old school blues duo\, making their Blues Tram debut! \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nSimon Wright:\nLive Looping has progressed leaps and bounds over the past few years. Artists like Ed Sheeran and Tash Sultana have pushed the once misunderstood performance technique into the lime light. Simon Wright is a master of the tools and has spent the last 2 years touring the world with his loopstation on his never ending tour dubbed #looptheworld. Watch him effortlessly lay down a full band sound with vocal and guitar layering and beatbox rhythms. Seamlessly weaving between soul\, funk\, blues and hip hop. \nMiss Whiskey:\nMISS WHISKEY is a Melbourne-based blues duo putting their raw and original stamp on harmonica driven swamp blues. As 2015 Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society Blues duo of the year\, they represented Melbourne at the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee. With Anna Scionti on guitar and vocals and Julie Noble on harmonica\, this gritty female duo play classic blues standards from the greats like Junior Wells\, Slim Harpo and Big Mama Thornton. Making their mark on the blues scene in Australia\, their independent album ‘One Cold Night’ debuted at No. 3 on the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Charts in March 2016. \nSaturday Nov 11th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Simon Wright (VIC) + Miss Whiskey (VIC)\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:30pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or http://www.bendigotourism.com/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks are available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. SUMMARY:The Main Event at Ulumbarra Theatre
DESCRIPTION:SHANE HOWARD AND BAND \nFor 40 years Shane Howard’s songs have mapped an Australian landscape. From the dry desert landscape where he penned his anthemic Solid Rock to the wild rivers of Tasmania\, Let the Franklin Flow he’s created a uniquely Australian voice and traversed a vast landscape in his travels. \nNow he travels to Central Victoria\, accompanied by a band of old friends and accomplished musicians: Rory McDougall (Drums)\, Ruben Shannon(Bass)\, Bruce Haymes (Keys)\, John Hudson( Guitar/Dobro) and Ewen Baker (Fiddle/Mandolin) along with some very special guests\, for a special night of music with old friends and new. \nThis retrospective concert is exclusive to the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival and will pay homage to Howard’s thirteen albums and 40 year musical journey of singing\, writing and journeying the globe\, from campfires to concert halls. \nYIRRMAL AND THE MILIYWUTJ \nYirrmal is the Youngblood (the title of his new debut EP) of the next generation and he is setting an example of living in two worlds\, balancing between traditional and contemporary cultures. \nHe is an inspiring songwriter and guitarist with a powerful voice\, singing songs about life and culture in both his first language of Yolngu Matha and English. Yirrmal fuses traditional and contemporary arrangements and sings with feeling and depth beyond his years. \nHe openly shares his identity\, spirit and connection to the land and engages the hearts of those that are lucky enough to hear him. Yirrmal will perform with his three-piece ‘Yirrmal and the Miliyawutj’\, giving a rocking edge to his songs. ‘Miliyawutj’ is a Yolngu word that refers to fertile waters where the fresh and salt meet\, inferring a balance between two entities. These powerful live performances are something every Australian should experience. \nHAT FITZ & CARA\nHat Fitz and Cara can in no way be mistaken for a dainty duo. They are festival favourites throughout Canada\, America\, Australia\, Europe\, and the UK and it has been said they pack more energy into one song than most have in an entire career. A unique combination of hill-style Gospel blues with old timey flavourings and stripped down to just voices\, guitar and vintage drums\, Hat Fitz & Cara embellish impeccable Rootsy originals with soulful vocals reminiscent of a time once forgotten.\nLaunching their fourth album\, ‘After The Rain’ is a unique vintage sound that these two have created themselves yet it is packed with a modern punch that cannot be denied once seen live.\n“This album shows this couple at the peak of their creative powers – soaring soul vocals\, visceral blues guitar\, unexpected quiet\, and sudden changes in feel and tempo. A masterful blend of roar and nuance”. SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/ Phil Manning + Simon & Tammy London
DESCRIPTION:The Sunday Blues Tram (as part of this year’s Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival) will feature an Australian blues legend in Phil Manning\, along with a sublime WA duo in Simon & Tammy London. \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nPhil Manning:\nA veteran of the music industry in Australia\, Phil Manning has been at the forefront of blues and roots style music for 5 decades.\nDuring this time he has displayed great talent on both the electric and acoustic guitar while absorbing influences from folk\, blues\, country and world genres and crafting them into his unique style.\nHis high energy playing and relaxed delivery make him an engaging artist performing both original and traditional songs.\nHe has toured throughout Australia and New Zealand\, as well as appearing at many festivals and venues in Ireland\, UK\, Vietnam\, Cambodia and even Bali.\nOver forty years he has recorded a large number of albums\, both as a soloist and as a member of Chain\, not to mention the countless sessions on other artist’s recordings\, film music and product ads.\nPhil Manning is a consummate live performer and it is here that he shines. \nSimon & Tammy London:\nOff the back of playing some of Western Australia’s favourite festivals including Fairbridge 2016 and supporting some of Australia’s big names\, Simon and Tammy London know how to please a crowd. The chemistry of their voices\, the harmonies that lay together\, can deliver you to a special place\, a rarity. Tammy’s gospel holler and clarion presence with Simon’s blues-gravel lows and soaring highs\, offers something that comes around only once in a while. Hailing from the southern coast of WA\, Simon and Tammy London have made their isolation work for them; the landscapes and people\, the places and lives within them all encapsulated in their disarming and honest delivery of songs.\n“Hearing Simon and Tammy London for the first time I was astounded. Riveting chemistry\, stunning harmonies\, superbly crafted songs…This is great Australian music that simply must be heard” Vikki Thorn (The Waifs) \nSaturday Nov 12th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Phil Manning (VIC) + Simon & Tammy London (WA)\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 1pm\, returning 3:30pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or http://www.bendigotourism.com/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks are available for purchase.
