SUMMARY:Tasha Zappala at The Basement Bar Bendigo
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Basement Bar Bendigo this Saturday night for an evening of smooth tunes\, cosy conversations and fine wines. A prohibition-style bar in the heart of the historic Bendigo\, come and slip out of the winter and back in time. Music Starts at 9pm. \nWith the last of my Melbourne shows finished up for the season\, I’ll be heading to Bendigo for this intimate solo night at the Bendigo Basement bar\, followed by the Blues & Roots Showcase/Fundraiser at The Vine on Sunday 17th July. \nThese mark my last shows in Victoria before I head South to Hobart to study music and disappear into a musical chrysalis\, not to re emerge until spring. Thank you to all of the amazing people who have supported my journey in in 2017. I’m hopelessly grateful to all of you.

SUMMARY:Josh Owen\, Cameron James Henderson & Tim Hulsman
DESCRIPTION:A special soul-filled triple header of singer/songwriter/guitarists at the Old Church on the Hill\, featuring: Josh Owen + Cameron James Henderson + Tim Hulsman. Doors open 7pm. Only $15 entry\, tickets at the door. \nAbout our artists: \nJosh Owen:\n“Josh’s effortless charm and fusion of jazzy\, acoustic soul seamlessly merge sun-soaked Latin riffs and off-beat percussionistic playing with wistful emotive anthemic choruses” – Callum Fitzpatrick – Beat Magazine.\n“Australia’s Segovia” – Ernest Ranglin.\nHoned in the musical melting pot of Melbourne’s Brunswick Street\, Josh’s modern day spin on spiritual soul\, a melange of funk jazz soul and reggae\, creates an upbeat and sensual urban soundscape that stretches the bounds of roots music. \nCameron James Henderson:\nHighly regarded singer songwriter/guitarist Cameron James Henderson’s songs consist of lush harmonies\, interwoven guitar textures and stomping grooves. Lyrically they evoke elements of Dylan\, whilst musically the duo’s influences range from Ry Cooder\, Muddy Waters and Mark Knopfler. Expect beautiful resonator slide combined with telecaster bite. \nTim Hulsman:\n“Hard worn Folk Blues with a Rock’n’Roll attitude”\nTim Hulsman is a genre-defying songwriter and wizard on the lap steel guitar. His soul-drenched vocals\, memorable melodies and unique roots/pop sensibility make every show a thrill\, but it’s through his story-telling stage banter that he shines as a true entertainer.\nTim was the inaugural recipient of the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation Scholarship (2015 -16) for excellence in song writing\, stagecraft and artistic vision. \nThe Old Church on the Hill is located on the corner of Harkness and Russell Streets\, Quarry Hill\, Bendigo.\nThe Singer/Songwriter Showcase events\, staged there by the BB&RMF crew on a semi-regular basis\, are an opportunity to enjoy a House Concert vibe in a public venue. The door charge is generally $15 for adults ($10 for Friends of the Festival members) and\, although refreshments are available for sale\, the focus is on THE MUSIC. Sound production is supplimented at the Old Church on the Hill by our friends at Muso’s Stuff Bendigo (facebook.com/Musos.Stuff) and 100% of the door takings are able to be shared between the performers with thanks to our valued sponsors at Kensey Care (facebook.com/KenseyCare).

SUMMARY:Kelly Brouhaha at The Basement Bar
DESCRIPTION:Roots warrior Kelly Brouhaha is all about the “Feelgood” side of life. An award winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with achingly soulful vocals\, her uplifting music is more than a simple band-aid to the blues. \n” An artist with a name you just can’t frown at because it’s just so much fun\, that girls got amazing pipes\, she sounds like Amy Whinehouse – but with more of a soulful edge as opposed to a jazz hook”\nNKECHI ANELE – TRIPLE J ROOTS AND ALL \nTouring her new single “As Long As There’s A Smile” this July.

SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/Richard Perso + Alawishus Jones & the OLs
DESCRIPTION:A fun time will be had on our July 2017 Tram\, as the rising young powerhouse from Yackanadandah Richard Perso makes his Blues Tram debut and a rag-tag ragtime ensemble makes it’s long awaited return to the rails: Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies; \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nRichard Perso:\nThe one man excitement machine\, Richard Perso has developed a delivery blending multiple genres fused into a folky rocking roots and blues. Perso doesn’t seem to have enough arms\, legs or lungs to pull off such a physically demanding performance but that doesn’t stop him from playing 3 didgeridoos\, driving a weapons cache of 3 overdriven acoustic guitars and replacing the drummer with little more than his 2 feet. \nAlawishus Jones & The Outright Lies:\nA humorous and informative approach to the story and meaning behind the blues which celebrates the souls who created this music\, commemorates their struggle and honors their legacy. “Time travelers Alawishus\, Wilby & Cleitus will take you back in time\, tell you stories about the old days and sing you some authentic rural blues\, ragged tunes\, maybe even some old time spirituals.” – Americana/pre war blues \nSaturday July 8th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Richard Perso + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:15pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or http://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. For the enjoyment of all patrons\, any rowdy or loud behaviour will not be tolerated. Event management reserves the right to refuse admission or evict patrons if requests to manage behaviour are not complied with; in this unlikely event\, tickets of offenders will be forfeited and no refund will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Hailey Calvert:\nIt’s stopped people in their tracks in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall\, had her sing backing vocals for Michael Bublé \, taken her overseas and all over Australia and been shared in wonder by the U.K’s Passenger on Facebook. Hailey Calvert’s voice is undeniably incredible. Its that warm and breathtaking blues voice together with impressive guitar skills and relatable stage presence\, as well as an achingly honest song writing style that makes each audience member feel like they are the only people in the room to hear her stories. That song writing style saw her take out the Blues category in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition; a worldwide comp entered by over 18\,000 entries from 20 countries. A regular festival player\, Hailey has graced the stages of Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival four times and Woodford Folk Festival three times just to name a few.

SUMMARY:Jojo Smith w/Lucie Thorne & Hamish Stuart live @the Old Church on the Hill
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 21st May 2017\nOld Church on the Hill\nJO JO SMITH\, LUCIE THORNE & HAMISH STUART\nwith opening set from Graciana Holland\n4 – 7pm\n$19.50 presale / $20 at the door if available\nhttps://www.trybooking.com/PHIP \nJO JO SMITH celebrates her 50th year as a performing musician! with very special guests LUCIE THORNE & HAMISH STUART \nJO JO SMITH is one of Australia’s greatest musical treasures\, a sexagenarian pocket-rocket\, soul-singing\, groove-driving tour de force and 2017 marks her 50th year in the biz. To celebrate this extraordinary\, generous life of music-making\, Jo Jo is hitting the road with her dear friends and musical comrades LUCIE THORNE & HAMISH STUART\, playing dozens of their favourite intimate venues across the land – including The Old Church on the Hill on Sunday 21st May. \nA radical exponent of the power of love and music – and certainly under-known given all the heavyweights from across the decades and genres who she’s worked with and influenced – Jo Jo Smith has a somewhat cult status\, deeply revered by fans and peers alike. As Thorne puts it\, “I sure don’t know any half-arsed Jo Jo fans. You’ve either experienced the joy and wonder that is being in the same room as this woman singing and playing\, or…you haven’t heard her yet!” \nLucie Thorne & Jo Jo Smith first met nearly a decade ago\, and became fast friends and huge fans of each other’s work. Lucie has been recording and touring in a sensational duo collaboration with legendary drummer Hamish Stuart for nearly a decade too\, quietly carving out their singularly poetic spacious sound. Jo Jo and Hamish have worked together numerous times throughout the past 30 years. The undeniable creative camaraderie and chemistry between all three artists will underpin the live format of the tour featuring Smith\, Thorne and Stuart in various combinations. This tour brings together three of our country’s finest talents for a series of unmissable\, powerful\, joyful\, intimate concerts that are bound to be the stuff of more legendary stories in Jo Jo Smith’s full musical life. \n“Jo Jo Smith drops jaws and melts hearts with every performance” Colin Thompson\, Bendigo Blues Festival Director \n“Jo Jo has been an inspiration to myself and many other musicians in Australia for many years” Renee Geyer \n“I’ve been lucky enough to grow up with Jo Jo’s music. But I do remember a specific moment at an intimate show when it hit me how brilliant she was. There was this deft capturing of the crowd with her rich vocals\, they flowed over us almost visibly (like amber\, like honey\, like the love light she sings about!) Then prickles of joy. I realised I was in the presence of a master. And boy did it feel good” Ella Hooper \n“Jo Jo Smith is a true soul singer. She sings soul music. She sings with and through her soul. Smith has a mighty weapon in her voice\, she reserves it’s power striking only when necessary” Marty Jones\, Rhythms Magazine \n“Thorne writes some of the most simple and beautiful songs you will hear” **** The Age \nhttp://www.jojosmithsoul.com\nhttp://www.luciethorne.com

SUMMARY:The Northern Folk live@The Old Church on the Hill w/supports
DESCRIPTION:We’re extremely excited to welcome The Northern Folk back to The Old Church on the Hilll\, Fri 28 April 2017. The Northern Folk were a stand-out act at last year’s Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival\, making a mountain of new fans and deservedly so.\nWith support sets from Sherri Parry and Deer Prudence\, this will be a truly special night on the tunes! \nAbout our artists: \nThe Northern Folk are an 11-piece indie-folk outfit riding a wave of momentum from the release of their self-titled debut LP in 2015. Hailing from Albury\, this collection of like-minded pals have been hitting the Australian highways to spread their sound. Full of energy and perfect for boppers and tail-waggers alike\, The Northern Folk top warm harmonies with big horn sections off with groovy bass lines\, and will be sure to have you foot-stomping and humming away. \nSherri Parry – Sherri is an 18 year old local Bendigo artist who’s been writing and performing her songs at a level well beyond her years. Her youthful dynamic stage presence\, soothing voice and guitar work showcase her passion for song writing and music. Lyrics formed from life experiences and melodies strung together with spirit give her music its own distinct style. \nDeer Prudence – Deer Prudence are an acoustic duo\, comprised of close friends\, Mariah McCarthy and Georgia Delves. The duo elegantly uses the seemingly effortless harmonies intertwined with their own style of Americana/ folk/pop song writing.\nSince forming from the humble beginnings of their high school music class\, Deer Prudence are no stranger to the stage\, performing at the Spring Fling Festival 2014\, Brunswick Music Festival 2015\, Anglesea Festival 2016 and Wintermoon Festival 2016\, Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival and have launched their debut CD in February 2017 to overwhelmingly positive aclaim. \nThe Old Church on the Hill is located on the corner of Harkness and Russell Streets\, Quarry Hill\, Bendigo.\nThe Singer/Songwriter Showcase events\, staged at the Old Church by the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival crew on a semi-regular basis\, are an opportunity to enjoy a House Concert vibe in a public venue. The door charge is generally $15 for adults ($10 concession) and\, although refreshments are available for sale\, the focus is on THE MUSIC. Proceeds from drink sales go to supporting Bendigo Sustainability Group – BSG and also support our Festival to keep presenting these magnificent musicians for your listening pleasure. Sound production is supplemented at the Old Church on the Hill by our friends at Muso’s Stuff and 100% of the door takings are able to be shared between the performers with thanks to our valued sponsors at Kensey Care (www.kenseycare.com.au).
