SUMMARY:The Main Event at Ulumbarra Theatre
DESCRIPTION:SHANE HOWARD AND BAND \nFor 40 years Shane Howard’s songs have mapped an Australian landscape. From the dry desert landscape where he penned his anthemic Solid Rock to the wild rivers of Tasmania\, Let the Franklin Flow he’s created a uniquely Australian voice and traversed a vast landscape in his travels. \nNow he travels to Central Victoria\, accompanied by a band of old friends and accomplished musicians: Rory McDougall (Drums)\, Ruben Shannon(Bass)\, Bruce Haymes (Keys)\, John Hudson( Guitar/Dobro) and Ewen Baker (Fiddle/Mandolin) along with some very special guests\, for a special night of music with old friends and new. \nThis retrospective concert is exclusive to the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival and will pay homage to Howard’s thirteen albums and 40 year musical journey of singing\, writing and journeying the globe\, from campfires to concert halls. \nYIRRMAL AND THE MILIYWUTJ \nYirrmal is the Youngblood (the title of his new debut EP) of the next generation and he is setting an example of living in two worlds\, balancing between traditional and contemporary cultures. \nHe is an inspiring songwriter and guitarist with a powerful voice\, singing songs about life and culture in both his first language of Yolngu Matha and English. Yirrmal fuses traditional and contemporary arrangements and sings with feeling and depth beyond his years. \nHe openly shares his identity\, spirit and connection to the land and engages the hearts of those that are lucky enough to hear him. Yirrmal will perform with his three-piece ‘Yirrmal and the Miliyawutj’\, giving a rocking edge to his songs. ‘Miliyawutj’ is a Yolngu word that refers to fertile waters where the fresh and salt meet\, inferring a balance between two entities. These powerful live performances are something every Australian should experience. \nHAT FITZ & CARA\nHat Fitz and Cara can in no way be mistaken for a dainty duo. They are festival favourites throughout Canada\, America\, Australia\, Europe\, and the UK and it has been said they pack more energy into one song than most have in an entire career. A unique combination of hill-style Gospel blues with old timey flavourings and stripped down to just voices\, guitar and vintage drums\, Hat Fitz & Cara embellish impeccable Rootsy originals with soulful vocals reminiscent of a time once forgotten.\nLaunching their fourth album\, ‘After The Rain’ is a unique vintage sound that these two have created themselves yet it is packed with a modern punch that cannot be denied once seen live.\n“This album shows this couple at the peak of their creative powers – soaring soul vocals\, visceral blues guitar\, unexpected quiet\, and sudden changes in feel and tempo. A masterful blend of roar and nuance”. (ABC RN) \nSaturday 11th November – Ulumbarra Theatre\nPop-up Gig in the Foyer (FREE ENTRY)\n05:00pm – 05:30pm Safari Motel (VIC)\n05:30pm – 07:00pm Kings & Associates (SA)\n05:45pm – 06:15pm Andrea Marr Band (VIC) \nThe Main Event (Tickets $44)\n07:00pm – 07:30pm Bill Barber & the Revelators (VIC)\n07:30pm – 08:15pm Hat Fitz & Cara (QLD)\n08:30pm – 09:15pm Yirrmal (NT)\n09:30pm – 10:45pm Shane Howard (VIC) \nPart of Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival 2017

SUMMARY:The Blues Tram w/ Phil Manning + Simon & Tammy London
DESCRIPTION:The Sunday Blues Tram (as part of this year’s Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival) will feature an Australian blues legend in Phil Manning\, along with a sublime WA duo in Simon & Tammy London. \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being suitably entertained by these two great acts: \nPhil Manning:\nA veteran of the music industry in Australia\, Phil Manning has been at the forefront of blues and roots style music for 5 decades.\nDuring this time he has displayed great talent on both the electric and acoustic guitar while absorbing influences from folk\, blues\, country and world genres and crafting them into his unique style.\nHis high energy playing and relaxed delivery make him an engaging artist performing both original and traditional songs.\nHe has toured throughout Australia and New Zealand\, as well as appearing at many festivals and venues in Ireland\, UK\, Vietnam\, Cambodia and even Bali.\nOver forty years he has recorded a large number of albums\, both as a soloist and as a member of Chain\, not to mention the countless sessions on other artist’s recordings\, film music and product ads.\nPhil Manning is a consummate live performer and it is here that he shines. \nSimon & Tammy London:\nOff the back of playing some of Western Australia’s favourite festivals including Fairbridge 2016 and supporting some of Australia’s big names\, Simon and Tammy London know how to please a crowd. The chemistry of their voices\, the harmonies that lay together\, can deliver you to a special place\, a rarity. Tammy’s gospel holler and clarion presence with Simon’s blues-gravel lows and soaring highs\, offers something that comes around only once in a while. Hailing from the southern coast of WA\, Simon and Tammy London have made their isolation work for them; the landscapes and people\, the places and lives within them all encapsulated in their disarming and honest delivery of songs.\n“Hearing Simon and Tammy London for the first time I was astounded. Riveting chemistry\, stunning harmonies\, superbly crafted songs…This is great Australian music that simply must be heard” Vikki Thorn (The Waifs) \nSaturday Nov 12th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Phil Manning (VIC) + Simon & Tammy London (WA)\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 1pm\, returning 3:30pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or http://www.bendigotourism.com/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO – drinks and snacks are available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. SUMMARY:This Way North with Luke Watt at The Golden Vine\, Bendigo
DESCRIPTION:Touring their third single ‘Make It Work’ this year\, alt-pop-rock duo This Way North explore the drive\, sweat\, tears and hard work that goes into making a passion project happen\, whether it’s music\, art\, sport\, or a small business.\nThey are a guitar/drum two piece with a deceptive and powerful full band sound. Fitting into the indie pop-rock world Cat Leahy and Leisha Jungalwalla are right at home on a festival or dive bar stage and have indeed played both in 2017 clocking over 100 shows.\nHonest songs about everyday life observations paired with a colourful and powerful stage show interaction. Switching between tight guitar licks and lush sexy slide guitar tones. Live guitar looping and bombastic\, mesmerizing drumming and exciting show-WOMAN-ship. Sounding like a glorious Saturday afternoon driving into the sunshine to your best mates party. \nThey will be joined by Luke Watt! \nLuke Watt’s songs “sneak up on you like a sucker punch” ( Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society) exhibiting a lyrical depth and thematic grit so rarely experienced in the contemporary Blues /Folk scene.\nWith influences such as Chris Whitley\, Richard Thompson and Kelly Joe Phelps\, Luke is a finger picker of great dexterity\, drawing on folk melodies and blues grooves to convey stories both dark and uplifting. He has appeared at music festivals in his home country of Australia such as The National Music Muster in Gympie\, The Queenscliff Music\nFestival\, The Brunswick Music Festival\, The Australian Blues Festival and The Port Fairy Folk Festival\, as well as performing shows across Europe and the legendary Terra Blues Club in New York. \nLuke’s new album “Hill End Ruin” was named ABC National’s “Album of the week” upon it’s release\, alongside artists such as Tom Waits\, Laura Marling\, Goyte\, Gillian Welch and Wilco. \n“He’s the real deal\, tied to the American tradition of stomping and picking\, but with an Australian twist. So real that it makes me smile.” (Tim Richie – ABC musical director) \n“A cracker of an album”\n(Neil Rogers\, 3RRR) \n“One of my favourite artists” (Lloyd Spiegel)

SUMMARY:Blues Tram w/Julian James + Alawishus Jones & The Outright Lies
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting two very bluesy acts on our first Blues Tram of 2018! \nEnjoy the sights of Bendigo’s architecturally stunning CBD from on board the sensationally restored vintage W Class tram\, while being serenaded by two great acts: \nJulian James:\nThe front man from the raucous Melbourne based Chicago Blues outfit ‘Catfish Voodoo’ has been playing around Australia for the past 8 Years. His style is based deep in the Blues/ Gospel Acoustic Strummers of the South\, with biblical references of Love\, Loss and Debauchery. Recorded with Paulie Bignell (The Detonators\, Paulie Bignell and the Thornbury Two) in Hailstone Studios (Three Kings)\, ‘Whiskey and the Devil’ is a mix of the contemporary and traditional that showcases a different side of a man familiar to Australian blues fans. \nAlawishus Jones & The Outright Lies:\nLet Alawishus\, Wilby & Cleitus take you folks all the way\nback to the year o’nineteen and thirty. They’ll likely tell\nyou stories about the old times and sing\nyou some authentic rural blues\, rag tunes & maybe even some old time spirituals\nWhat can we expect from AJ&theOLs? Old blues; Maybe some pre blues stuff that contains elements essential to the birth of blues like work song\, field holler & ragged time; Mostly what you can expect though is 3 guys having a lot of fun; Guitar\, drums\, washboard\, bass\, trumpet\, harmonica & ukulele; Stories and anecdotes that could have historical significance or might be outright lies! \nSaturday January 13th\nBlues Tram\, feat: Julian James + Alawishus Jones & The outright Lies\nDeparting Central Deborah Goldmine (76 Violet Street) at 2pm\, returning 4:15pm.\nTix: $35 from Bendigo Visitor Centre 1800 813 513 or https://www.bendigotourism.com/tours/bendigo-cbd/bendigo-blues-tram\nFollow The Blues Tram here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBluesTram \nStrictly no BYO. Drinks and snacks available for purchase. \nThe Blues Tram is organised and staged by Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival Inc\, a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. \nPlease Note:\nThis is a music appreciation event. For the enjoyment of all patrons\, any rowdy or loud behaviour will not be tolerated. Event management reserves the right to refuse admission or evict patrons if requests to manage behaviour are not complied with; in this unlikely event\, tickets of offenders will be forfeited and no refund will be available.
